Turned out to be a really easy fix, simply a broken vacuum line. run through all of the lines to check for leaks. The cable that hooks to the slider arm has a round metal end on it that is clamped to the cable. It fits over a little metal pin that rides in a groove on the control arm. You have to place the slider all the way to one side (I don't remember if its heat or cool) and this exposes the metal pin.

I have read the shaft size is different so i am guessing ill need a 99+ knob along with the switch.
