WebAug 18, 2015 · There is no incompatibility with the GT40 heads in terms of fit. The combustion chamber on '73 302 heads is 58.2 CCs, GT40s are 65 CCs, Ps are 59.6 CCs. The stock pistons with stock heads produce only a 8.3 to 1 compression. The stock heads may in fact work better in the RPM range these engines work with.

If you smooth out the bowls and exhaust ports and gasket match the intakes they should flow decent. If you dont feel comfortable doing this higher a pro. Depending on the Headers you have you might be okay.

I've … WebJun 24, 2004 · Absolute BEST fit, as far as plug clearance, on the GT40P is the Dynomax 3/4 length shorty. It's only downsides are it's 1.5" primaries and the 3-bolt collector and mid-length which require either a custom or mod'd H pipe. BBK 1 3/4" longtubes fit better than the 1 5/8"s. They're probably #2 as far as plug clearance.
WebMar 14, 2024 · As to how to tell the heads on the motor, take a look at the front corner on the pass side. Next to the spark plug, you'll see either GTP (40P) or GT (40) indicating which it is. Also, behind the accessories (so tougher to see) are some cast bars. GT40 would be 3-bar heads, while GT40P are 4-bar heads. In addition to above markings.
