WebJan 5, 2007 · When I was training as a MC mechanic we had to straighten forks as part of our testing. Rule 1: No creases or sharp bends. Once metal moves and creases it will never be as strong. Rule 2: Put the tube on a set of V-blocks and use a dial indicator to check the run out. That's how far the tube is tweaked out of straight. We would straighten the triple clamps along with the fork tubes. First, if the bend was severe, there is likely a crease in the fork tube along the lower edge of the lower triple clamp.

WebJul 27, 2005 · You've gotten good advice about BENT forks, but your forks are probably just twisted in the triple clamps. You can follow James' good advice, or just do a quick trailside fix...bang the front wheel (hitting the tire side only) against a tree or other large solid object.

It all depends where the forks were in their travel when they took the hit that bent them. Take a look at the two plates that flank the steering head tube. They should be perfectly flat. Instead of trying to fix it, you should ideally change it. For the brakes, if there's oil on the rotor, get it cleaned.
